5 Colossal Mistakes In Your Skin Care Routine

5 Colossal Mistakes In Your Skin Care Routine

Mistake #1: You’re using products with harmful ingredients

It’s bad enough that you’re stressing over the way you look, but what if the products you’re using to look good are actually making you look and feel worse?

Toxic ingredients are hidden everywhere in your home, from cleaning products to your favorite moisturizer.

This is the NUMBER 1 MISTAKE women (and men) are making in their beauty routine for a reason: it doesn’t matter how much you spend or which celebrity is endorsing it, if it’s filled with toxic chemicals and harmful ingredients, it’s not going to do you or your skin any good.

Here are some of the top culprits lurking in your skin care products right now:

  • Parabens
  • Sulfates
  • Phthalates
  • Synthetic fragrances

Mistake #2: You’re ignoring seasonal changes

Picture this: you finally got a good routine down-packed and your skin is GLOWING! All of a sudden, your skin completely shifts and you’re back to square zit. Sound familiar? If so, you’re not paying attention to seasonal changes. BIG NO NO!

This causes your skin to malfunction and, without the proper attention, can threaten the health of your skin. Think about it! Your skin is an adaptable organ relying on you to consider the external impacts in order to stay in harmony.

Pay close attention to how your skin is reacting as the weather changes. Are you oily in the Summer with normal skin in the Winter? Combination in the Fall but dry all throughout Spring?

Once you know your skin’s cycle and how it reacts to changing seasons, you can start preparing for what your skin will need and never be caught by surprise again.

Mistake #3: SPF is out of the rotation

There is absolutely no excuse to not use SPF on a daily basis. None. Nada. Zip! The name of the game is prevention but even if you’re in your 40’s and 50’s your skin is still susceptible to sun damage.

It should go without saying that living in notoriously sunny regions makes SPF MANDATORY but even if you live in relatively gloomy areas or experience seasons where the sun isn’t as bright, you should be reaching for SPF.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: if the sun’s shining (even if it’s just a teeny tiny bit), sunblock is on your skin.

Make it easy on yourself and use a moisturizer with SPF, that way you’re getting the hydration you need and the right amount of protection all in one.

Speaking of hydration...

Mistake #4: You’re not hydrated enough

By now you’ve probably seen celebrities swearing by their “just drink water” skin care routine (lookin’ at you Jennifer Aniston!).

While drinking water should absolutely be something you regularly do, there are other ways of ensuring your skin has all the moisture and hydration it needs to stay smooth and supple.

Hyaluronic Acid is thirsty skin’s knight in shining armor. One molecule can hold up to 1,000x its weight in water and it works to actively absorb any moisture from the air to give you long-lasting hydration throughout the day.

Other great hydrating ingredients include glycerin, aloe vera, glycolic acid and cocoa butter.

Mistake #5: You’re underestimating your diet

Just as the ingredients you put on your body matter, the ingredients you put in your body are just as important.

You know the saying, “You are what you eat.” It’s cliche, yes, but it’s also true! How could eating processed junk food NOT reflect poorly on your skin?

Before you start pointing your nose up and insisting that your diet isn’t an issue, at least experiment! What have you got to lose?

From drinking water to rid your body of toxins to adding more greens and healthy fats like avocado and nuts to your meals, it’s an easy change to make for a drastic improvement in your skin’s brightness and texture.

Do you know someone guilty of these mistakes? Is that person you? Luckily, being aware of your mistakes is the first step to fixing them.

Now that you know what you’re doing wrong, it’s time to start doing things right!
