When it comes to skin care, men tend to lean towards the item that has an all-in-one aspect. Or that one product that has been sitting on your girlfriend's counter for three years now. Whatever the case may be, it’s evident that men tend to not cater to their skin needs, which is a grave mistake. Not caring for your skin will lead to premature aging and an uneven complexion and skin tone. Adding some quick and easy steps to your skin care routine can have huge benefits for you down the line.
WHY DO MEN NEED SKIN CARE?
Everyone needs skin care. It’s a false belief that only women need to take care of their skin. We all grow old and get wrinkles, so why not try to age in the best way possible? Shaving, spending more time outdoors and generally having a higher risk of cancer are only some of the reasons that men need to adopt a skin care routine into their lives.
The products that men typically use are primarily connected to their facial hair, and those products strip your skin and are packed with skin-irritating fragrances. You need help and protection from SPF and antioxidants just as much if not more than women.
Skin is skin, and caring for your skin is crucial to your health. Healthy skin not only looks good, but it also helps keep us free of diseases and infections. The wrong skin care habits can lead to acne, sores, rashes and wrinkles.
HOW IS MEN’S SKIN DIFFERENT THAN WOMEN’S?
Men’s skin is about 25% thicker than women's skin. It has more collagen, more and larger hair follicles and more sebum production, which is all due to increased testosterone production. This means that a man’s skin is less sensitive and is able to handle more potent ingredients than women.
Since men's skin has more collagen and elastin, they also show signs of aging much later than women do. However, it is still important for men to take care of their skin by following a simple skin care routine that incorporates all the important steps.
Step 1: Cleanser
Use our sulfate-free, Gentle Foaming Cleanser, which removes dirt and grime from pores. It also works great for oily skin. It is highly recommended to use a mild foaming cleanser before you shave to help reduce surface oil and properly reach the hair follicles.
Step 2: Shave
If you prefer to grow out your beard for that Wolverine look, that’s great. We love a man with a beard. If you prefer a more clean-shaven look, then you should shave after cleansing your face. You already know how to shave your face better than anyone else, so just make sure your face is a bit damp prior to applying any shaving cream.
Step 3: Toner:
Our Purifying Facial Toner will clear away any lingering post-shave residue like gunk, shaving cream, and excess hairs that can clog up pores and follicles, and cause ingrown hairs to form. Simply wipe your face down with a toner-soaked cotton pad before you apply your aftershave. The Salicylic Acid in the toner works as an exfoliator for your skin, which is very important for men who regularly shave their faces. It also helps to balance oil production.
This step is often skipped by men and women alike, but it is crucial for achieving clean and healthy skin.
Step 4: Serums
Serums are often overlooked by men because they don’t know just how beneficial they are for the skin. After you thoroughly clean your face with the toner, you should apply a serum that caters to your skin care concerns. You can use one or both if you want the added benefit.
If you have any dark spots or discoloration that you want to control apply an alcohol-free serum with Vitamin C. The Vitamin C + E Serum is brightening and very helpful for sunspots, aging spots, or inflammation on your face.
If you have any dry patches or an overall dry skin that you want to revitalize you should apply the Pure Hyaluronic Serum after you shave to hydrate and replenish your skin.
Step 5: Eye Cream
Nothing gives away your age than the lines around your eyes. The skin around your eyes is thinner than the rest of the skin and is the first place that shows signs of aging. Failing to take care of that area will lead to wrinkles, dark circles, and crow’s feet. Our Caffeine Eye Cream helps reduce puffiness and dark circles, and in the long run, it will help prevent premature aging.
Step 6: SPF
Apply a moisturizer with SPF every morning to keep skin hydrated and protected. This step is not only necessary, but it’s also mandatory. One of the most inexpensive ways to keep your skin looking its best for the longest period of time possible is to use a sunscreen. Sun damage is cumulative, which means the sooner you work to prevent it by applying SPF daily, the better you’ll be.
The Ultra-Hydrating Moisturizer w/ SPF 20 is a perfect two-in-one product for men. It provides the necessary sun protection as well as hydrates the skin. Shaving creams tend to strip the skin of its natural oils, so giving back a little bit of moisture is extremely helpful for maintaining a balanced skin tone.
At night: Retinol + Moisturizer
At night you can repeat the cleanser, toner, but skip the SPF and the serums. Instead, use the Retinol Night Cream, which makes sure your skin’s texture stays even and smooth. A retinoid at night is the gold standard to help reverse sun damage, stimulate collagen, exfoliate, open pores and fight pimples.
Apply the Retinol onto clean skin, and follow it up with the Day + Night Hyaluronic Cream if you need more hydration.
